Each year, the ACHA, through a coaches’ poll, selects outstanding players from each of its four regions (Northeast, Southeast, Central, and West) to two All-American Teams (1st and 2nd team). The coaches also nominate an All-American MVP and a National Coach of the Year. In addition, the coaches also nominate All-Region Teams (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) as well as an All-Region MVP and a Regional Coach of the Year.

Jeff Sawhill 2nd Team All-American 1st Team All-West Region A physical force on the blue line, Jeff’s stellar performance in his second season with the Spartans did not go unnoticed around the league as he earned the franchise’s 1st All-American nomination since Ryan Lowe in 2005-06. Routinely tasked with shutting down the opposing team’s top lines, Jeff was still able to contribute offensively as he led the Spartan defense in goals (14) and was second in assists (29), points (43), plus/minus (+19), and power play points (26). With the graduation of 5-year veteran Paul Fuller, Jeff took on a much needed leadership role and mentored the team’s relatively young defense corps. Jeff will certainly be a key cog in next season’s quest for the club’s first National title.
Andy Dickerson 2nd Team All-West Region In his 4th season with the team, Andy earned his first ACHA All-West Region selection. A playmaking center by trade, Andy anchored one of highest-producing lines in the ACHA alongside Sam Cimino and Mickey Rhodes. Andy played all 40 SJSU games and led the team in assists (44), points (70), and power play points (28) and was 2nd on the team in plus/minus (+34). 2009-10 marked Andy’s 3rd straight season with 20+ goals, 40+ assists, and 70+ points as he moved into 4th place on the team’s all-time scoring list. Entering his 5th and final season in 2010-11, the Spartans will be counting on him to help deliver the club’s first National title.

At the end of every season the SJSU Hockey family comes together and recognizes their members’ most outstanding achievements by way of four prestigious team awards: The Gilbert Ip Memorial Trophy (Most Valuable Player), The Gordie Turner Award (Most Dedicated Player), The Steve Stich Award (Most Improved Player), and The Barney Award (Toughest & Most Disciplined).
2009-2010 Award Winners

Sam Cimino The Gilbert Ip Memorial Trophy Sam had a rookie season to remember: he led the team in goals (33), plus/minus (+36), and game-winning goals (7), and was second on the team in points (68). His point total set a rookie record and his goal total tied the rookie record set in 1993-94 by Brent Faulhaber. Sam admirably filled the goal-scoring void left by the graduation of 5-year veteran Sean Scarbrough and became the team’s go-to scorer in late-game situations, knotting OT game-winners against Denver and against UNC (at the Regional Playoff). With 4 goals at the 2010 National Tournament, Sam is primed to do some special things in 2010-11.
Steven Stichler The Gordie Turner Award In his 4th season on the team, Steven had his best year yet as he recorded 16 goals and 33 points while cutting his penalty minute total in half (from 106 to only 50 PIMs). Steven did everything that was asked of him by the coaching staff, including making the difficult transition from wing to center, and became a regular contributor at both ends of the ice as a punishing phsycial threat and go-to penalty killer. Serving his 3rd straight season as Treasurer, the Spartans’ most finely-tuned physical specimen worked tirelessly on and off the ice to make sure the team was at its best; a feat he will most certainly aim to duplicate in 2010-11.
Richie Norris & Mason Console The Steve Stich Award For the first time in franchise history, two Spartans shared the MIP award. Both were equally deserving for two very different reasons. Richie, a 3rd-year player, was one of only two players to play in all 40 SJSU games and doubled his 2-year point total in a single season with 7 goals and 21 points. In addition to being one of the team’s fastest & hardest-working defensive forwards, Richie considerably improved his offensive play to become a viable 3rd-line threat. Mason, meanwhile, came into his rookie season as a freshman forward fighting for a spot in the lineup. He continually impressed the coaching staff with his speed, poise, and hockey sense and when injuries opened up a spot on defense he was the first one they asked to fill the need. He effortlessly made the transition and by the time the post-season rolled around he was one of the Spartans’ top puck-moving D-men. Both will be key team assets in 2010-11.
Kyle Dutra The Barney Award In his second season on the team, Kyle was one of the most dependable Spartans on the ice. The very definition of a two-way center, Kyle was an irreplaceable player that was effective in all situations. He recorded 16 goals and 43 points at the offensive end and despite his relatively diminuitive size, Kyle was one of the team’s toughest players; never afraid to mix it up with the opposition’s biggest foes. While providing timely physicality, Kyle was much like previous Barney award winner Skyler Yu in that he only recorded 20 PIMs during the season. Look for Kyle to bump, grind, and snipe his way through opposing defenses in 2010-11.
