The San Jose State Spartan Ice Hockey club was founded in 1990 and has been to the ACHA National Tournament 9 times in its 19-year history, including three consecutive visits (2005-2007). The team has grown to become a perennial Western powerhouse, qualifiying for the National Tournament 9 times in the last 14 years. Spartan, otherwise known as Sharks Ice at San Jose, has been the full-time home of the San Jose State Spartan Hockey team since 2000. In 2005, with the addition of a real-live submarine klaxon, the arena was affectionately and unofficially renamed the U.S.S Spartan. The Spartan was named "The Loudest Barn in the West" by a tally of West Region fans, and is usually packed to capacity during home games. Remodeled in the summer of 2005, the nearly 170,000 square-foot facility features four (4) NHL-sized ice rinks (the Spartans play on the North Rink, which has a listed seating capacity of approximately 550, but is routinely packed with upwards of 1000 screaming fans on game nights).
